“Tokyo-Mitsubishi International plc prefers to work with an organisation such
as Computer Aid International who can make good use of such equipment than to scrap it or store it for long periods. Giving our old computers to Computer Aid International has proved so much easier than arranging for disposal/scrapping equipment ourselves.

We called up Computer Aid International and they verified their policy of securely removing any applications and data from the computers and then arranged to collect the PCs. Computer Aid International accepts full liability upon receipt of computers so all we had to do was list the equipment that was removed. This year (2002) we made our first major donation of 250 units and we intend to make further donations whenever possible.”

Nick Pye, Hardware Support Manager, Technology Department, Tokyo-Mitsubishi
International plc. (part of the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi group)

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales is pleased to be involved with the charity Computer Aid International. As an organisation, we are conscious of our environmental responsibilities and are therefore pleased that our old PCs continue to be used, rather than being dumped. We are also interested in helping children in under-developed countries to learn about technology and our hardware gives them this opportunity.”

Phil Warburton
Information Protection Manager
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales

We donated our old PCs to Computer Aid International because we wanted to ensure they would be put to good use. It’s the first time we’ve disposed of PCs like this and it was remarkably straightforward so we will definitely be donating again.”

James McKinnie, IT and Database Manager, British Lung Foundation

Standard Decommissioning Service

Our Standard Decommissioning Service includes collection for an arranged fee, free data wiping using Blancco Basic version 4.2 r2, and scrap disposal if necessary. We also send a letter of disposal and certificate of donation to all donors. Blancco have customised their Data Cleaner software specifically for Computer Aid International which enables us to provide you with a totally free service. Using the same basic algorithm, Blancco Basic offers a no frills data wipe to the same standard as Data Cleaner. Blancco Basic is fully guaranteed by Blancco.

Enhanced Decommissioning Service

Our Enhanced Decommissioning Service is available for those who require a report on the data wiping of their hard drives. We can provide this by using Blancco Data Cleaner version 3.7 r1 which has been approved by government security group CESG, by NTSL and US Ministry of Defence. It is the only software to have been approved to both baseline and enhanced standards. This service costs £5.00 per base unit and is additional to the standard service which you will also receive. The report will include a full hardware asset inventory for all base units that have been data-wiped.

If you are a government department and your equipment carries data classified as 'Top Secret' or 'Confidential' (as per government guidelines), purging of this data requires a 3 times overwrite of the hard disc using Blancco software. If you require this service, please do let us know and we will provide you with a quote for this.

Where requested, Computer Aid International will introduce you to Blancco UK to enable you to procure data cleaner licences so that the removal of sensitive data can take place in-house before donating the computers to Computer Aid International.

Asset Management

For those who need a fully managed service but who also wish to donate their equipment to Computer Aid International, we have a partnership with a company who provide a prestigious asset management service for large corporations. These services include asset tracking, data wiping reports and indemnified guarantees, and possibly a return on some of the more valuable assets such as laptops and high-end computers. Call 020 7281 0091 to discuss this service further.

Press and Publicity

We can provide you with "stories" and photographs, which you can use in your
in-house media, to highlight your generous donation. We are happy to discuss further press and publicity options. We can work with your PR team to deliver mutually beneficial publicity.

Collection and Delivery

Donations can be delivered to our premises from Monday to Saturday between 10.30am and 4.00pm. Please phone James on 020 7281 0091 in advance to book a delivery into our schedule. Unfortunately, we may have to turn away deliveries that are not booked in. We can arrange collection of your equipment at a very reasonable cost. Please phone James on 020 7281 0091 to get a quote for this service.

Computer and Peripheral Waste

Our standard service assumes that all reasonable effort has been made to send us working equipment in the donation. Where we have identified non-working equipment in a donation or equipment, which does not meet our specifications, then we may recharge to cover the cost of disposal of this equipment at £5.00 per item.

All our waste is disposed of through licensed waste management companies and complies with legislation governing the disposal of electronic waste.

If you have waste equipment to dispose of then we may be able to offer a disposal service through our waste management partner. Please ask for details.

EU legislation on waste and recycling- WEEE Directive

The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive became EC law in February 2003 and will become UK law by August 2005. Computer Aid International is working with many end users to help them become WEEE compliant. The new law will encourage the safe disposal of old electrical equipment, including PCs, through recycling and refurbishment.

For equipment purchased after August 2005, the law requires manufacturers to bear the main burden of legal responsibility for the collection, treatment and recovery of any new PCs or IT equipment that you purchase. However, until then it is the responsibility of every user to ensure that obsolete PCs do not end up in landfill. Yet, surveys show that the majority of UK businesses remain blissfully unaware of the new laws.
Vaneeta Mahtani, Computer Aid International, explains how the charity can help.

“IT managers need a policy in place so they are seen to be conforming with the directives, as well as Data Protection laws which require companies to wipe data held on hard disks when disposing of PCs. Industry experts have expressed concerns that the UK does not have an infrastructure to cope with the need to recycle millions of PCs once the new law is introduced. Computer Aid International can help by providing a viable alternative to costly decommissioning and recycling. Donating a PC to charity for reuse as its intended purpose effectively means that your PC is not considered to be waste and you are no longer responsible for its disposal under the requirements of the Directive. Our Letter of Disposal is evidence of this fact and satisfies the requirements of the legislation, that you have treated your redundant IT equipment in a socially responsible and environmentally friendly way.”

Computer Aid International is working with a growing number of end users, as well as producers to provide an effective solution for redundant PCs. Most recently Dell Computers, one of the world’s biggest PC manufacturers, has delivered the first consignment of equipment to Computer Aid International as part of its ongoing recycling effort for redundant equipment. By donating your PCs to Computer Aid International you will be complying with the EU Directive on Waste of Electronic and Electrical Equipment - Please see our WEEE Guide to Business for more information.
