Background
Computer Aid refurbishes computers for re-use in schools and
community organisations in developing countries. By refurbishing your
old computers we are able to give them an average second-user life of
three extra years, or 6,000 additional hours of use, in some of the
poorest countries in the developing world. Launched in April 1998 we
have shipped 50,000 fully refurbished computers to where they are most
needed in more than 90 different developing countries. Computer Aid
International is a charity registered in England and Wales (no. 1069256)
and a company limited by guarantee (no. 3442679).
Pentiums
Computer Aid accepts donations of any Pentium-II
233MHz and above (or
Pentium 233MHz equivalent) computers
plus any colour monitors and all related peripheral equipment. The equipment
should ideally be in good working order. Should you wish to dispose
of stock which includes machines of less than Pentium specification
and/or any other technical assets which we are not able to recycle for
re-use overseas, please contact us to discuss your needs. Any equipment
which we cannot re-use, by repairing or cannibalising, we send to be
recycled, reclaiming all re-usable components, metals, plastic, glass
etc. This means that even of the fraction of equipment that we cannot
refurbish for re-use overseas less than 5% ends up in landfill. Because
of recently imposed charges for scrapping unusable equipment we may
have to make a charge for donations which contain a high proportion
of scrap. We will provide you with a quote for this service where necessary.

Hard
Disk Data Wiping
All computers received and processed by Computer Aid have all
data and programs removed. All hard disks are overwritten as standard
and at no cost to you. Should you wish us to undertake any specialised
or advanced data protection please contact us. We are able to conduct
fully unrecoverable multiple disk wipe and multiple all-sector over-writes
of hard disks to US Department of Defence standards and if an asset list
is supplied we can have each hard disk individually signed off by the
relevant operating technician. A small fee may be payable for such specialist
services.
Legal
Liabilities
Computer Aid accepts full legal liability for any donated equipment
from the time it is received by us i.e. covering any subsequent damage
or injury arising from the malfunctioning of the covered technical assets.
We hold comprehensive public liability insurance. Computer Aid complies
fully with the requirements of the Data Protection Registrar. We are implementing
an Equal Opportunity Policy and prefer to work with recipient organisations
overseas which have effective Equal Opportunities policies.
Press
and Publicity
Computer Aid can provide photos of recipient schools overseas
and other data for your newsletters, in-house magazines or web-site. We
will be very happy to work with you on joint press and other media publicity
to highlight your socially responsible giving to a wider audience.
