Our trek will provide an opportunity to visit some of the most spectacular landscapes in Africa! The Simien Mountains are one of the major highlands of Africa, rising to the highest point at Ras Dejen (4533m) which is the fourth tallest peak in the continent. It is the nearest thing Africa has to the high altitude plateau found in Bolivia or Tibet and this has led it to be dubbed the “Tibet of Africa”.

Gentle highland ridges at altitudes above 3600m covered with grasses, isolated trees and giant Lobelia are found on the high plateau that ends abruptly at 1000m – 2000m deep escarpments. Natural lookouts have been formed in the escarpment which offer spectacular views along the high plateau and over lowlands areas to the extent that on a clear day it is possible to see up to 100 kilometres away.

The Park was created primarily to protect the Walia Ibex, and over 1000 are said to live here. Other inhabitants include the unique Gelada Baboon and the rare Simien Fox. Over 50 species of birds have been reported in the Simien Mountains. Only part of the Park can be reached by 4WD vehicle. The rest is criss-crossed by paths that for centuries have connected villages and pasturelands. These make fantastic trekking trails.

The £2,700 sponsorship that you raise is enough to provide an entire 20 PC lab to a disadvantaged school for the first time – as well as covering the cost of your trip.

Although a tough physical challenge, the route can be completed by anyone of average fitness after training.

Here is what Ralph Brazier, a participant on a previous challenge said about it:

"Going through spectacular scenery with a group of like-minded people was simply one of the best experiences in my life. It was truly gratifying that the charitable funds I raised were helping some of the hundreds of schoolchildren who enthusiastically ran to the edge of their school playgrounds as our group cycled by. You are given tremendous support and loads of ideas for the fundraising and once you are into the swing of it the donations soon add up - so much so that I beat my target by 50%! The feeling of being an intrepid fundraiser and reaching you financial goal was, for me, just as satisfying as reaching the end of the ride"

You, or a group of friends or colleagues, can set yourself this challenge of a lifetime today!
